At least 60 staunch members of the ruling National Resistance Movement-NRM from Bung Parish, Ayabi Sub County in Kwania district have defected to Uganda Peoples Congress-UPC.
The defectors were received on Monday by Hon. Kenny Auma, Kwania District Woman Member of Parliament and Jimmy Emmanuel Okello Ecun, former Apac district speaker who doubles as UPC Assistant Secretary General in a rally held at Ayomlwor Village, Bung Parish in Ayabi Sub County.

While recieving the defectors, Auma Kenny encouraged the new converts to feel free and work for the party, saying they all have equal rights just like former UPC members who had been in the party.
“UPC is a political party for the people of Lango. As a daughter of Lango, we shall not let this party die, we shall do what it takes to mobilise more people to join UPC,”She said, tasking the new converts to mobilise more NRM and other political parties to join UPC to strengthen the party’s support at the grassroots.
Moses Odur, the LCI Chairman of Ayomlwor Village, NRM flag bearer for LCI Chairperson’s Seat who has crossed to UPC said he decided to join UPC after supporting NRM for many years but gained northing out of it.
“I supported NRM for over 20 years but gained northing out of it not even from any government program. I flogged a dead horse and that is why I have decided to join the mighty UPC party,”he said.

The development came just a day after 17 NRM members crossed to UPC in a campaign rally held at Agwiciri trading center in Inomo Sub County by Kwania North County Member of Parliament Bob Okae and his counterpart Kenny Auma, Kwania Woman Member of Parliament.
300 NRM surrendered to UPC after three weeks of campaign trail
Moses Odwono, Kwania District UPC Party Registrar said they have so far received 356 defectors from the National Resistance Movement-NRM within a period of only three weeks of the Parliamentary and Local Government campaign trail.
“Since we launched campaign on November, 10, 2025 upto date, we have welcomed 356 converts from NRM. While on campaign trail in Chawente Sub County, we received 66 new converts. From Akali Sub County 56 NRM members crossed to UPC. At Bung Parish in Ayabi Sub County we received 60.From Owiny Parish in Ayabi Sub County we registered 10 converts. Apire Parish in Aduku Sub County 67, Inomo town council 87, Ajok Parish in Inomo Sub County we received 20 and from Agwiciri Parish in Aduku Sub County we registered 19 converts,”he said.
Odwono attributed the development to tangible achievements registered by Kenny Auma, Kwania District Woman MP and her counter part Bob Okae, Kwania North County Member of Parliament.
“Many are crossing to UPC because of our clear agenda and the achievement by MP Bob Okae and MP Kenny Auma. The door is widely open for more NRM, FDC, NUP and more supporters of different political parties to join UPC for transformative and visionary leadership.”he added.
Kwania, UPC’s stronghold
Kwania District carved from Apac in 2018 is currently dominated by UPC. In the 2021 general election, UPC won two Parliamentary seats, out of the three Parliamentary seats. The party founded by Dr Apollo Milton Obote, former Ugandan Executive Prime Minister, two times President and a Lango son from Akokoro in Apac District, won 20 directly elected LCV councilors’ seats out of 22. Eight LC3 Chairpersons in Kwania district are under UPC tickets meanwhile 3 subscribes to NRM.
