Museveni Urges KIU Graduates to Become Job Creators, Calls for Review of Sponsorship Scheme.

BUSHENYI , UGANDA -November 2, 2025: President Yoweri Museveni has issued a call to action for university students, urging them to pursue professional courses that will equip them to become job creators upon graduation, rather than solely job seekers. The President’s remarks were delivered by Deputy Speaker Hon. Tayebwa during the 32nd graduation ceremony at Kampala International University (KIU) in Bushenyi district, where over 2600 graduates received their degrees.
President Museveni expressed satisfaction with universities like KIU for fostering relevant professional fields such as medicine and research, which he believes are crucial drivers of national development. He reiterated his commitment to supporting both public and private universities that offer strong professional programs and research opportunities. The President specifically commended KIU for its dedication to professional teaching.
In a related but distinct development, Deputy Speaker Thomas Tayebwa took the opportunity to advocate for a significant overhaul of the government-sponsored student scheme. He argued that the current system disproportionately benefits the children of affluent families who often attend elite secondary schools, while diverting resources that could be used to support less privileged students. Tayebwa proposed redirecting funds from the government sponsorship program towards a more accessible loan scheme, ensuring that financially disadvantaged students have a better chance to pursue higher education.
The 32nd graduation ceremony saw a diverse cohort of graduates specializing in a range of critical fields, including Medicine and Surgery, Medical Laboratory Science, Pharmacology, Entomology, Anatomy, Public Health, Gynecology, Law, and Information and Communication Technology (ICT).
Among the distinguished guests in attendance were Deputy Speaker of Parliament Thomas Tayebwa, who had the personal pleasure of seeing two of his relatives graduate. The RDC of Obongi, Samuel Mpimbaza Hashaka, was also present to celebrate his daughter, Dr. Bivako Rachel, who not only graduated with a Master’s in Obstetrics and Gynecology but has also recently been promoted to the position of Associate Consultant. Additionally, the Deputy RCC of Soroti, James Chemtai Small, was recognized as his daughter earned a Bachelor’s degree in Law.
