North Kyoga Police Urge Vigilance Amid Festive Season and Election Preparations

LIRA, KAMPALA – December 16, 2025 – As the festive season approaches, the North Kyoga Regional Police Command has issued a comprehensive safety advisory, urging residents and visitors to prioritize vigilance while ensuring a peaceful celebration amid preparations for the 2026 General Elections.
Superintendent of Police (SP) Patrick Jimmy Okema, the North Kyoga spokesperson, delivered the message, emphasizing that security agencies are on high alert to safeguard the region during the “unique” convergence of holiday gatherings and political activity. With nine days until Christmas and 16 days until the New Year, the region is encouraged to embrace the spirit of joy while adhering to safety protocols.
Preventive Measures for Households and Communities
The police highlighted the seasonal rise in crimes such as theft, house break-ins, and domestic violence, urging residents to avoid leaving homes unattended and to inform neighbors of travel plans. Community cooperation through neighborhood watch groups and prompt reporting of suspicious activity were stressed as critical measures. SP Okema also reminded the public to resolve disputes peacefully to maintain harmony during family gatherings.
Event Safety and Compliance
Entertainment events, including music shows and fireworks, require prior written approval from the Regional Police Commander (RPC) or the Inspector General of Police (IGP). Organizers are mandated to collaborate with District Security Committees to ensure venues meet safety standards, including clear exits, firefighting equipment, and adequate lighting. Overcrowding is strictly prohibited, and the police warned against advertising non-attending artists, labeling such fraud a criminal offense.
Worship and Travel Safety
The season’s extended prayer sessions and overnight worship events were flagged for heightened security planning with local authorities. For travelers, law enforcement will intensify checks on road and water safety, targeting drunk driving, overloading, and reckless behavior. In Lake Kyoga regions, the police urged operators to use seaworthy vessels, avoid overcapacity, and ensure life jackets are available.
Fire and Financial Caution
Fire hazards linked to end-of-year activities were addressed, with advice to switch off appliances before travel, keep fire extinguishers accessible, and avoid leaving children unattended. Amid increased holiday spending, the public was cautioned against online fraud, fake cash agents, and carrying large sums in public. The use of cashless transactions and verification of online sellers were recommended.
Crime Prevention and Counter-Terrorism
Rising risks of livestock theft and property crime were noted, with calls for heightened vigilance against suspicious traders. The police also reinforced counter-terrorism measures, urging the public to report unattended luggage or unusual activity in crowded spaces. SP Okema highlighted close coordination among security agencies to preempt any threats.
