Obongi District Set for Another 180 Million Shillings Boost for Top-Performing SACCOs
OBONGI, UGANDA – January 29, 2026 – In a significant move to bolster economic empowerment, the Obongi District Resident Commissioner (RDC), Mr. Samuel Mpimbaza Hashaka, has announced that the government will disburse over 180 million shillings to nine Savings and Credit Cooperative Organizations (SACCOs) in the district before June this year.
The revelation was made during a meeting between the RDC, the Assistant Resident District Commissioner (ARDC) Ms. Umuhoza Habiba Furaha, and leaders of the nine beneficiary SACCOs. The leaders are currently undergoing a capacity-building training at the President’s office in Obongi town.
RDC Hashaka confirmed on Thursday that this upcoming disbursement is an additional injection of capital, noting that the same nine groups have already received 180 million shillings from the government previously. This continued support underscores the groups’ performance and the government’s commitment to the program.
“Obongi SACCOs have so far been given a cumulative total of 940 million shillings under government funding,” Hashaka stated, highlighting the substantial investment in the district’s grassroots economy.
The RDC, however, coupled the financial promise with a stern advisory on transparency and good governance. He urged all SACCO leaders to diligently hold their Annual General Meetings (AGMs) and provide clear accountability for all funds received.
“This accountability is not just a formality; it is the key to unlocking continuous annual funding. Proper management and transparency will ensure this initiative’s sustainability and growth,” Hashaka advised.
The SACCO leaders, representing groups from various sectors including mechanics, tailors, restaurant owners, boda boda riders, and produce dealers, expressed their gratitude for the support. They specifically thanked President Yoweri Museveni for his economic empowerment initiative, the Emyooga program, which they credited for directly improving the livelihoods of the people of Obongi.
Their appreciation is well-founded, as Obongi district has emerged as the star performer in the West Nile region under the Emyooga program. The district’s SACCOs are recognized for their exceptional management and impact, setting a benchmark for others in the region.
This upcoming funding is expected to further cement Obongi’s leading position and provide a significant capital boost to local entrepreneurs and small businesses, driving economic activity and self-sufficiency at the grassroots level.
