JUBILATION ERUPTS IN NORTHERN UGANDA AS HON JOYCE ACAN OKENY WINS DISABILITY MP ELECTIONS WITH LANDSLIDE VICTORY.

KAMPALA, UGANDA – February 6, 2026 – The people of Northern Uganda are celebrating the resounding victory of Hon. Joyce Acan Okeny, who won the election and retained her seat for Member of Parliament representing persons with disabilities with generous 602 votes. The elections, which took place on February 3, 2026, saw Okeny emerge as the top candidate, securing the highest margin of victory on record.

Hon Joyce Okeny’s victory has been hailed as a beacon of hope for persons with disabilities in Uganda, with many praising her vibrant leadership and commitment to advocating for the rights of people with disabilities. The Minister for Disability, Hellen Asamo, who was seeking to retain her seat, polled 228 votes, failing to secure re-election.

In her victory speech, Hon Joyce Acan Okeny pledged to prioritize the retention and expansion of the National Special Grant for persons with disabilities, which she described as a “lifeline” for the community. “This fund was at risk of being scrapped, but we fought to ensure it remained. I will continue advocating so our people keep receiving these vital funds,” she stated.

The elections, which were held at Nsambya Gardens, saw a total of 730 delegates representing persons with disabilities converge to elect their Members of Parliament. The contest featured a number of candidates, including State Minister for Disability Hellen Asamo, sitting MPs Mpindi Bumali and Alex Ndeezi, as well Achan Joyce. The fresh entrants were Ndyamukashi Eunice, Robert Ssewagudde, Achayo Rose, Yona Waswa, and Kato Gabriel.
Hon Acan Joyce Okeny polled 602 votes and her fellow
incumbents Mpindi Bumali 560 votes and Alex Ndezi 275 votes retained their seats. Meanwhile one new entrance Ssewagudde Robert polled 530 votes. Hon. Laura Kanushu, the National female legislator for persons with disabilities, was unopposed and continues in office.

The victory of Hon Joyce Acan Okeny has been met with widespread jubilation in Northern Uganda, with many hailing her as a champion of the rights of persons with disabilities. “The people with disabilities have spoken, and we’re proud of the new representatives,” said an official representing persons with disabilities. As Hon.Acan Joyce Okeny prepares to be sworn in May 2026 and to take up her role, she is expected to continue advocating for the rights and interests of persons with disabilities accross Northern Uganda and beyond.
