Labour Day: Norbert Mao Top Contender for speakership Race Calls for Fair and Safe Work Environment

KAMPALA – The Minister of Justice and Constitutional Affairs and MP-elect for Laroo-Pece Division, Hon. Norbert Mao, has rallied Ugandan workers to demand a fairer and safer work environment as the country marks International Labour Day 2026.
In a special message to workers across the nation, Mao, who is also a top contender for the Speakership of the 12th Parliament, highlighted the importance of productivity and the promise of new beginnings.
“May Labour Day highlight productivity and bring with it the promise of growth and opportunities. Let us embrace this day with hope and determination to uplift our communities,” Mao stated.
Speakership Bid and National Service:
The Justice Minister thanked the public for their continued support of his speakership bid, emphasizing his commitment to institutional reform and integrity. Mao has positioned himself as a “bridge-builder” capable of mediating between the government and the opposition, pledging to lead a parliament that acts as a robust check on the executive free of corruption.
“I remain committed to serving you to the best of my ability. Together, let us celebrate Labour Day for positivity and progress,” he added.

The main national celebrations for 2026 are being held at Nkoyoyo Boarding Primary School grounds in Buikwe District under the theme: “Safeguarding Uganda’s Progress: Empowering the Workforce and Promoting Decent Work for Competitive Enterprises.” President Yoweri Museveni is presiding over the event as the Guest of Honour.

The government has used the week leading up to the celebrations to urge urgent investment in skills development and labor reforms, particularly for the Uganda’s population under the age of 30.
