Oyam, Uganda: Police in Oyam have arrested a woman for allegedly stealing UGX 5 million meant for a beneficiary of the Government Re-stocking Programme.
The suspect, Akwero Susan, 40, a resident of Baruwero Village, Alibi Parish, Aleka Sub-county, was arrested after the matter was referred by the RDC’s office.
North Kyoga Regional Police Spokesperson SP PJ Okema said Akwero fraudulently obtained the National ID and SIM card of Ayo Silbina, a registered beneficiary, during profiling in May 2026. “Suspect gave beneficiary only UGX 200,000 and two goats.”
On June 8, when government disbursed UGX 5 million to the SIM card, Akwero allegedly withdrew the money. She gave the complainant, Epila Semmy, 52, only UGX 200,000 and two goats.
“When the complainant demanded the balance, the suspect refused and became arrogant,” Okema said.
Epila reported the case to police on June 14. During interrogation, Akwero admitted to taking the money. Police recovered the full UGX 5 million, which is now exhibited as evidence.
Inquiries are ongoing to recover the victim’s SIM card and National ID. Police have also recorded a statement from the Re-stocking Programme focal person.
“We urge the public to report fraud involving government programmes,” Okema said.
