Gulu, Uganda: June 30, 2026: Police in Gulu District are holding an LC2 Chairperson and the Parish Chief of Pugwinyi Parish, Awach Sub-county, over alleged irregularities in the implementation of a government restocking program.
Shs 5 million dispute:
Two other suspects in custody are sisters, Lanyero Jenifer and Betty Ocwee. Police say the case stems from Shs 5 million received by Betty Ocwee.
According to Lanyero Jenifer, Betty came to her and requested her national ID details and telephone number. Betty allegedly said she had already discussed with the LC2 and Parish Chief to use Jenifer’s particulars to secure a restocking slot on her behalf since they are one family.
Trouble started when the money was paid to Betty Ocwee. She reportedly refused to hand it over to Jenifer, claiming she used her sister’s details because she did not have an ID to qualify.
DRDC orders arrests:
Deputy Resident District Commissioner [DRDC] Cosmas James Okidi took action after the matter was reported to the RDC’s office. All four suspects were apprehended. Commissioner Okidi warned that the rule of law is very clear on those who are corrupt and vowed to arrrest without fear ir favour any one found embazzling government funds meant to benefit the wanahinchi.
Gulu Officer in Charge of the Criminal Investigations Department [OCCID] only identified as Enock confirmed the arrests. “The file will be ready for court judgement upon completion of investigation,” Enock said.
