Community questions land title held by Imeedet, wants transaction history made public.
KATAKWI — Elders in Oedepus Palice, Ngariam Sub-county, are demanding that an individual identified as Imeedet produce a land title and explain to the community how thousands of acres was acquired and were taken by Imeedet without community consent.
Zokwii John Michael told the media that residents recently discovered a title exists for the expansive tract. The elders insist the rightful owners were not consulted.
“On behalf of the people I represent, we want Imeedet to come here to this land and show us proof of land title, and back that title with the history of how Imeedet came to own thousands of acres,” Okwii said.
The community is asking for documentation showing the land’s history and chain of ownership. Okwii said residents believe due process was ignored and want an open verification to prevent further disputes over the land in question.
Cases like Ngariam, they say, highlight the need for public access to land registry information and more community sensitisation on land rights.
Community leaders are now pushing district officials, political leaders and government agencies including CDF Gen. Muhoozi Kainerugaba to step in to help the community of Ngariam.
“Time for politics is finished; now it’s time for all of us to unite and do something beneficial to the community,” Okwii said, calling for a peaceful resolution.
Some of the residents who spoke to the media said they are waiting for a response from the title holder and direction from authorities so that the dispute is handled through legal and administrative channels.
Attempt to get comment from Imeedet was futile by press time since her known phone number was unavailable by press time.
