Lira, June 30, 2026: The North Kyoga Regional Police has recorded six murder cases in one week, with most linked to assaults, domestic misunderstandings, mob justice, and drinking disputes.
The incidents claimed six lives across Kwania, Apac, Oyam, and Lira districts, police said in a statement.
Kwania recorded three deaths:
Kwania District registered the highest number with three cases.
The first occurred on June 25, 2026 at Anamoringo Village, Wigweng Parish, Atongtidi Sub-county. Akello Asantorina, 74, died after a domestic altercation with her son, Okae Felix, 30.
Police say Okae returned from brick-burning and allegedly assaulted his nine-year-old son, Okello Elvis. Akello intervened and struck her son with a mortar. Okae allegedly overpowered her and repeatedly assaulted her with the same object. Both were taken to Aduku Health Centre IV, where Akello died. Okae is under medical care as investigations continue.
In a second case, Kali Denis, 36, died after being assaulted by Odur Bernard over a Shs 500 dispute involving locally brewed waragi. The incident happened at a bar in Olaipali Trading Centre, Abang Parish, Abongamola Sub-county. Kali died while receiving treatment at Aduku Health Centre IV.
The third case was registered on June 29, 2026. Amoc Martin was allegedly assaulted by four men at a drinking joint in Amuli Village, Aboko Parish, Aduku Sub-county. The suspects, identified as Okao Ambrose, Ojok Opio, Ojok, and Ocola, fled and are being pursued by police.
Mob justice in Apac
In Apac District, one Ogwang was killed by an angry mob on June 25, 2026 at Ayeng Trading Centre, Ayago Parish, Apoi Sub-county, over allegations of goat theft. No arrests have been made and investigations are ongoing.
In Oyam District, Odongo George, 49, was attacked on June 26, 2026 in Amoneno Village, Acuti Parish, Ngai Sub-county. Police say suspect Banya Denis assaulted him with a brick after Odongo allegedly called him a thief in public. Odongo died while being rushed to a health facility at Boga Trading Centre. Banya has been arrested and is cooperating with investigators.
Body found in Lira
In Lira District, the body of Okello Patrick, 55, was found along a roadside in Iguli Village, Onywako Parish, Itek Sub-county. Police believe he was returning from a drinking place at Amito-Mot Trading Centre when he was killed. Investigations are underway.
North Kyoga Regional Police Spokesperson SP Patrick Jimmy Okema said the cases show a pattern of minor disagreements, theft allegations, domestic conflicts, and excessive alcohol leading to loss of life.
“We strongly condemn acts of violence and mob justice in all their forms and remind the public that no individual has the authority to take the law into their own hands,” Okema said.
He urged the public to report suspects to police for due legal process. Okema also called on District Local Governments to regulate drinking establishments through by-laws to promote responsible alcohol consumption.
North Kyoga Police recorded six murders in one week across Kwania, Apac, Oyam, and Lira. Cases involved domestic violence, mob justice, and alcohol disputes. Spokesperson SP PJ Okema condemned mob justice and urged district authorities to regulate bars to curb alcohol-related violence.
