Oyam- July 1, 2026: Police in Oyam District are investigating a fatal accident that claimed the lives of a woman and her child in Kamdini on Tuesday morning.
The accident occurred at about 7:30am at Kamdini, near the Uganda Revenue Authority [URA] checkpoint along the Lira-Kamdini road, police said.
A semi-trailer, Reg. No. KDJ001D/ZD9275, yellow and blue in colour, was being driven by Mwendwa Komu, a Kenyan resident of Nairobi. Police say the driver was travelling from Lira towards Kamdini when he allegedly hit the rear of an unidentified cement truck.
The trailer lost control, crossed to the opposite lane and knocked a cyclist before overturning into a trench and landing on its right side.
The cyclist was identified as Adero Miriam, 24, a Muno-Muk of Lango from Pida Village, Pukucha Parish, Kamdini Sub-county. She was riding with her child, Angwen Miriam. Police said two dead bodies have been retrieved and conveyed to St John Aber Hospital mortuary pending postmortem examination.
Six passengers who were in the trailer were also involved. They are Nasimiyu Rose, 40; Ogape Nicholas, 54; Nasimiyu Betty, 21; Felister Nelly, 29; Nandera Aisha, 3; and a minor of about one year. All are residents of Kiryadongo. The driver, Mwendwa Komu, is critically injured and was rushed to St. John’s Hospital, Aber, for treatment.
The trailer remained at the scene pending removal by a heavy breakdown crane.
Assistant Superintendent of Police [ASP] Ochwo Apollo, the District Traffic Officer, and Corporal Okongo Joachim visited the scene.
“Efforts to have the people trapped under the trailer removed are ongoing. The cause of the accident is yet to be established,” North Kyoga Regional Police Spokesperson SP PJ Okema said.
A Mercedes-Benz trailer knocked and killed cyclist Adero Miriam, 24, and her child Angwen in Kamdini, Oyam, on July 1. Police say the driver hit a cement truck, lost control and overturned. Six passengers survived with injuries. The Kenyan driver is critical in hospital. Rescue efforts are ongoing.
