14 Killed, 28 injuired as speeding OPIT Travellers Bus Collides With Trailer at Bobi Trading Centre
OMORO, UGANDA — Fourteen people have been confirmed dead and 28 others injured following a fatal road crash involving a passenger bus and a trailer along the Kampala–Gulu Highway.
According to Traffic Police spokesperson Michael Kananura, the accident occurred on Tuesday, July 7, 2026 at about 9:34 PM at Bobi Trading Centre.
A bus, registration UBE 110H belonging to OPIT Travellers Company, collided head-on with a Mercedes-Benz Actros trailer, registration KBS 564D/ZE 7948.
“_Preliminary reports indicate that the driver of the bus, who was allegedly speeding, attempted to avoid a pedestrian crossing the road, lost control of the vehicle and collided head-on with the oncoming trailer,_” Kananura said.
Emergency response
The injured were rushed to nearby health facilities for treatment. Police teams responded to the scene to manage traffic and begin investigations.
Kananura warned motorists against reckless driving, especially at night when visibility is poor.
“_We continue to urge all motorists to observe speed limits, particularly during night hours. Drivers must remain alert, anticipate the movement of pedestrians in trading centres and always maintain speeds that allow them to stop safely,_” he said.
Police said investigations into the cause of the crash are ongoing and further details will be released in due course.
The Kampala–Gulu Highway has in recent years recorded several fatal accidents, with speeding, night driving and pedestrian crossings cited as major contributing factors.
