SERERE, UGANDA
Serere District is set to host a community mass run that seeks to link sport with climate action and youth engagement.
Dubbed the Green Kyere Run, the event is scheduled for Friday, October 9, 2026, at Akuoro-Olupe Primary School starting at 7:30am.
According to organisers, the run is being held under the theme, “The run where nature meets community.” Participants will pay Shs25,000 for a kit, with proceeds going towards tree planting, school sanitation and youth skills programmes in the district.
The initiative is anchored on three pillars — Run Green, Build Community, Protect Our Future.

Organisers say the campaign seeks to turn sport into a tool for public education, climate awareness and collective action at grassroots level.
“This isn’t just a run. It’s a statement. We’re linking healthy bodies to a healthy environment and showing that communities can lead the change themselves,” the seven-member organising committee said in a statement.
The event is organised by Kyere Development Initiative. The team is chaired by Oluka Everest, deputised by Apolot Suzan, with Chris Ochen as secretary. Hellen Adoa is in charge of technical and financial coordination, while mobilisation is led by Ebekulasi Otala Joseph and Echengu Samuel. Olupot Max sits on the advisory panel.
The organisers clarified that the run has no political attachment.
They said the timing is deliberate, at a time when climate shocks are affecting agriculture and many young people remain unemployed.
Invitations have been extended to schools, community-based organisations and residents across Serere and neighbouring districts. Registration will open early on race day at Akuoro-Olupe Primary School.
“Come one, come all. Run for your health. Run for your community. Run for the future,” the organisers said.
