Government and Religious Leaders agree to Promote Peace and Development in West Lango Diocese .

KWANIA ,UGANDA — December 9, 2025: In a significant effort to foster unity and development, Dr. Akello Alice, the Northern Region Commissioner in charge of RDCS, led a high-profile delegation to Aduku Cathedral on Tuesday, engaging with the Bishop of the Diocese of West Lango and local clergy. The meeting, attended by 5th Infantry Division Commander Major General Keith Katungyi, retired Canon Ogwang Odyero, and Kwania Deputy RDC Aturu Abraham, underscored collaboration between government, military, and religious leaders to advance peace, security, and prosperity in the Lango sub-region.
Maj. Gen. Keith Katungyi, the 5th Infantry Division. commander, praised the Anglican community’s leadership in promoting peace and development.
“It is imperative that we support initiatives like SACCOs (Savings and Credit Cooperatives) to enable the clergy and communities to access government resources and drive economic empowerment,” Katungyi emphasized. He also urged religious leaders to remain united, encouraging their congregations to prioritize government programs such as infrastructure development.
The general reiterated his commitment to fulfilling President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni’s pledge to Bishop of West Lango regarding a car, highlighting the administration’s focus on supporting religious institutions.
In her address, Dr. Akello Alice commended the clergy for their resilience in service to the community and called for unity and tolerance.
“As religious leaders, you play a pivotal role in educating the public on government programs like PDM (Performance, Development, and Monitoring), Emyoga, and Operation Wealth Creation,” she said. “This includes a moral obligation to combat corruption and advocate for President Museveni’s vision, which prioritizes the common man.”
Dr. Akello also announced plans to request the President’s presence during the groundbreaking ceremony for a new cathedral in the sub-region, scheduled after election campaigns conclude. She expressed gratitude to Maj. Gen. Katungyi for contributing one million shillings to the cathedral’s funding drive.
Kwania Deputy RDC Aturu Abraham highlighted the importance of security and stability in Kwania District, especially during the campaign period. He lauded Maj. Gen. Katungyi for his leadership in restoring peace in the wake of Karamojong raids, noting the commander’s efforts to support families affected by the violence.
“Collaboration between government and religious leaders is key to maintaining stability and ensuring prosperity,” Abraham affirmed.
Retired Canon Ogwang Odyero pledged to mediate disputes among communities and leaders in Lango, stressing the need for cohesion to channel national resources effectively.
“President Museveni’s support must reach the people of Lango without hindrance. It is our duty to ensure the region remains united,” he declared.
The meeting concluded with a shared vision of peace, development, and public engagement, with all parties committed to amplifying government initiatives and fostering social harmony in the sub-region.
Commissioner Dr. Akello Alice has indicated that the government will continue supporting projects like the cathedral construction, symbolizing a renewal of faith and infrastructure in Lango. As election campaigns approach, the emphasis on unity and policy advocacy is expected to intensify reflecting the growing synergy between governance and religious leadership in Northern Uganda, highlighting a proactive approach to addressing regional challenges.
