LIRA CITY ,UGANDA-April 22 ,2026: Police in Lira City East Division have arrested more than 100 suspects in a high-stakes intelligence-led operation aimed at crushing a wave of violent crime in the city.
The massive sweep, conducted on the night of April 21, 2026, targeted the hotspots of Boke and Agwetagwet. The operation was launched following an outcry over rampant motorcycle robberies, burglaries, and cases of rape.
During the raid, which was commanded by the District Police Commander (DPC) for Lira City East, security forces recovered an assortment of weapons and tools, including pangas, house-breaking implements, and master keys used for picking padlocks.
The North Kyoga Regional Police Spokesperson, SP Patrick Jimmy Okema, confirmed that the suspects are currently in custody, facing charges related to the possession of house-breaking implements.
“This operation is a direct response to the thuggery in these areas. We intend to significantly reduce crime and restore peace for our residents,” Okema stated.
Public Screening
The police, in coordination with local leaders, are set to conduct a public screening exercise to identify known criminals among the detainees. Following this, files will be submitted to the Resident City State Attorney (RCSA) for legal guidance and prosecution.
SP Okema urged the public to maintain a strong relationship with security organs. “We call for continued collaboration. Security is a shared responsibility, and your information is vital to curbing these crimes,” he added.
Residents of Boke and Agwetagwet have welcomed the move, hoping the crackdown will put an end to the nighttime terror that has plagued the division.
