Lamwo County MP Hon. Nyeko Johnson Kezekiya has Called for Urgent Government Intervention Over Drought and Famine.

LAMWO, UGANDA — Lamwo District is facing a serious food crisis 0761928988 crops across all sub-counties on Paluga, Putika, Agoro, Madiopei, Lamwo town council among other areas in the district.
In a press statement released on Wednesday evening, the Member of Parliament for Lamwo County, Hon. Nyeko Johnson Kezekiya, revealed that gardens in Palugar, Madiopei, Agoro, Putika, and Lamwo Town Council have dried up before maturity. The crop failure has left thousands of households uncertain about their next meal and wiped out critical livelihoods reliant on rain-fed agriculture.
“Unless immediate action is taken by the Ministry of Disaster, our people are likely to experience severe food shortages within the next two months. The people of Lamwo in East Acholi are resilient, but resilience must be matched with timely support. We cannot wait until hunger becomes a disaster before we act. The time to intervene is now,” asked Hon. Nyeko Kezekiya commonly known as “Man of Action.”
The current weather crisis has resulted into prolonged dry spells affecting the people of Lamwo and Acholi sub region plus other parts of the country. Hon. Nyeko noted that children, pregnant mothers, the elderly, and other vulnerable groups are at the greatest risk of acute hunger and malnutrition which is now common in many areas of Lamwo District and Acholi sub-region as a whole.
Hon. Nyeko announced intentions to formally write to the Minister for Relief, Disaster Preparedness and Refugees, Hon. Engola Sam, requesting direct emergency intervention for food relief and seeds for the second season.
Emergency Relief: Immediate distribution of food relief and climate-resilient seeds to affected communities should if possible be arranged in time to save thousands lives from starvation in Lamwo.
Civil Society Support: Mobilization of development partners, CSOs, religious institutions, and well-wishers to support vulnerable families is yet another strategy.
Climate-Smart Agriculture: A plea to local farmers to adapt to shifting weather patterns by embracing water conservation and drought-tolerant crops.
The threat of famine comes amidst high-level legislative debates where Prime Minister Robinah Nabbanja announced coordinated emergency responses to save the situation. Hon. Nyeko emphasizes that immediate cross-sector mobilization is the only way to safeguard East Acholi from a humanitarian catastrophe.
