Voters in Obongi District Led by RDC Hasaka Celebrate Historic Wins for President Museveni and NRM Flag Bearers

OBONGI, UGANDA — 24 January 2026: Hundreds of voters in Obongi district have held celebrations in honor of President Museveni’s win in Obongi and the win of the district Chairperson Haji Abib Buga Khemis as NRM flag bearer and the massive win by the district councillors.
The celebrants described the win by Hon Kaps Fungaroo as MP as an accident created by propaganda of tribalism and some NRM leaders in the district like the general secretary Adams Dradema and the deputy speaker Senya Janet who confused the electorate by supporting the independent candidates and opposition.
Voters in Obongi District erupted in jubilation after President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni secured an overwhelming 77.94% of the presidential vote in the 2026 elections, accompanied by sweeping victories for National Resistance Movement (NRM) candidates for LC5 and district councillor positions. The results marked a resounding endorsement of the ruling party’s dominance at both national and local levels, with celebrations led by key political figures and former opposition leaders alike.
Museveni’s Resounding Victory
President Museveni’s commanding 77.94% in the district underscored his enduring popularity in Obongi, a hub for agricultural and cultural activities. The win was widely attributed to strong grassroots mobilization and the NRM’s track record in local development.
NRM Dominates Local Elections:
The NRM also clinched all contested local positions, with Haji Abib Buga emerging victorious as the elected Chairperson of Obongi District, defeating four opponents. Other notable NRM triumphs included Azubu Micheal’s win as district councillor for Aliba Subcounty and the unopposed confirmation of the NRM’s woman district councillor for the town council.

A significant political development was the withdrawal of the Forum for Democratic Change (FDC) candidate for the woman district councillor position by former opposition leader Hon. Scovia Aletiru. Though Aletiru had contested the FDC presidential ticket, her withdrawal paved the way for the NRM’s unchallenged victory in that race. Analysts view the move as a tactical concession, potentially reflecting internal FDC dynamics or a broader effort to foster political unity.
Celebrations and Gratitude:
The celebrations, led by Resident District Commissioner (RDC) Samuel Mpimbaza Hashaka, Haji Abib Buga, Azubu Micheal, and former FDC stalwart Hon. Aletiru, highlighted a rare display of cross-party solidarity. Hashaka expressed gratitude to voters, stating, “Your support reflects your trust in the NRM’s commitment to progress. We will work tirelessly to deliver results for Obongi.” Haji Abib Buga pledged to prioritize infrastructure and youth empowerment, while Hon. Aletiru, despite her party’s setbacks, praised the peace and order of the electoral process.

The election results signal continued NRM influence in Obongi, with voters emphasizing stability and development over political change. As the district prepares for new leadership, attention will focus on implementing the NRM’s 2026–2027 development agenda and addressing regional challenges, including climate resilience and healthcare access.
